Start Today: Borinquen Plaza OLDER ADULT Center

In an era of vanishing third spaces, venues like the Borinquen Plaza Older Adult Center are vital to local culture and community. Borinquen Plaza is one of RiseBoro’s ten older adult clubs and centers.

Founded by and for Puerto Rican New Yorkers, Borinquen Plaza is a place for older adults to congregate and socialize over scheduled activities and authentic cuisine. At its center, a mural painted in 1982 depicts a scene from a Puerto Rican village — an emotional and nostalgic reminder of home for many members who haven’t returned in decades.

After thirty years of vibrancy, the beloved Borinquen Plaza mural began to peel and fade. That’s where Colossal comes in. We love any opportunity to contribute and celebrate our local community; through our Start Today program, we restored this village scene to its original beauty.

Speaking with the staff and seniors during our progress reinforced the power of public art. This culturally specific mural is a source of pride and a centerpiece to celebrations at Borinquen Plaza, and the seniors were elated to see it restored.

We’ve spent over 20 years speaking to the importance of murals, but seeing this truth reflected back to us in the reactions of the Borinquen Plaza community members was more convincing than words could ever be. Public art can deliver the culture and connection that keeps communities thriving, preserves heritage, and brings Brooklyn residents closer together.

Colossal team joins members of Borinquen Plaza Senior Center to celebrate the completed mural restoration.
